This article explains how to manually configure an IMAP mailbox in New Outlook. Some screens may be skipped automatically depending on Outlook’s account detection.

Step 1: Welcome Screen

On the "Welcome to the new Outlook" screen:

  • Suggested account: your email address

  • Click Continue

Step 2: Select Email Provider

Note: Outlook may automatically detect IMAP and skip this screen.

On the "Select your email provider" screen:

  • Select IMAP

Step 3: IMAP Account Settings

On the "IMAP" configuration screen, enter the following:

Login Information

  • Password: your mailbox password

  • Click Show more

  • Set Use recommended settings to No

Incoming Mail (IMAP)

  • IMAP incoming server: server.hostname.com

  • Port: 993

  • Secure connection type: SSL / TLS

Note: Although the mail service supports STARTTLS for IMAP, it may not work reliably with New Outlook. SSL/TLS is recommended.

Outgoing Mail (SMTP)

  • SMTP username: your full email address (usually pre-filled)

  • SMTP password: your mailbox password

  • SMTP outgoing server: server.hostname.com

  • Port: 587

  • Secure connection type: STARTTLS

  • Click Continue
    (Do not select "Select Provider")

Step 4: Sync Your IMAP Account

On the "Sync your IMAP account" screen, Outlook will display a notice explaining that:

  • Emails will be synced to the Microsoft Cloud

  • Contacts and calendar items created in Outlook will be stored in the Microsoft Cloud

  • Click Continue to finish setup
